Description

Cold-rolled sheet is produced from hot-rolled coil: the scale is removed by pickling, the strip is rolled in the cold state to the required thickness, annealed to restore ductility and skin-passed for a flat surface, then cut to length. Dimensions are to GOST 19904-90 and GB/T 708-2019, technical requirements to GOST 16523-97 for general-purpose sheet. Compared with hot-rolled sheet, cold-rolled sheet has a tighter thickness tolerance, a smooth scale-free surface and stable properties in bending.

08ps is a low-carbon semi-killed steel to GOST 1050-2013, the main grade of general-purpose cold-rolled sheet; 08kp is rimmed steel with a cleaner surface. To GOST 16523 the sheet is ordered with drawing category N (normal) or G (deep) and a surface finish group. The Chinese equivalent is DC01 to GB/T 5213-2019, the same class as DC01 to EN 10130 and SPCC to JIS G3141; for export to the USA — ASTM A1008 CS Type B. We fix the grade and certificate standard, the drawing category and the surface condition in the specification.

At the mill before shipment the bureau's inspector measures thickness with a micrometer at the edges and in the middle of the sample sheets and checks it against the tolerance of GOST 19904 or GB/T 708, checks the format, squareness of cut and flatness, and examines the surface for scores, scratches, dents, rust and emulsion marks. The mill test certificate (MTC) is checked against the pallet tag by heat number, the composition against the grade limits. Oiling, or its absence per the specification, the integrity of the moisture-proof wrapping and the fastening on the pallet are checked. The report with photographs is handed to you before shipment.

Applications

  • stamped and bent parts for machine building
  • enclosures of electrical cabinets, panels and instruments
  • metal furniture, racking and safes
  • household appliance parts for painting and enamelling
  • small-section welded tubes and profiles
  • stock for powder coating

Packing and shipment

Pallet on a timber base: sheets in anti-corrosion paper and film, steel corner protectors on the edges, strapped with steel band; mill tag with grade, heat, thickness and number of sheets.

Equivalents are the closest match, not identical: chemistry and tolerances differ between standards. The exact grade and standard are written into the contract.

Buyer questions

How to read a mill test certificate for sheet
In the certificate (MTC) the mill states the standard and grade, heat number, thickness and format, chemical composition of the heat, mechanical test results and batch number. We check the heat number against the tag on every bundle and the marking on the sheets, and the composition and properties against the requirements of the standard named in the specification. A certificate without a heat number, or with a composition outside the limits of the standard, is grounds for not accepting the batch.
How St3sp differs from St3ps and from Q235B
St3sp is killed steel, fully deoxidised; St3ps is semi-killed. For welded structures and service at sub-zero temperatures St3sp with a category to GOST 14637 is usually specified. Q235B is the Chinese grade of the same class with a yield strength of 235 MPa minimum and an impact test at +20 °C. A mill in China issues the certificate to GB/T 700 or, under contract, rolls the plate to GOST requirements and states this in the MTC.
How sheet tonnage is calculated
Theoretical weight per square metre is 7.85 kg for every millimetre of thickness; the weight of a sheet is thickness multiplied by area and by 7.85. Actual weight differs because of the thickness tolerance: a minus tolerance makes the batch lighter than theoretical. In the specification we fix which weight the batch is settled by — theoretical or actual by weighing at the mill — and the same weight goes into the packing list.
What is checked during inspection at the mill
Thickness with a micrometer at several points of every sample sheet, width and length with a tape, flatness and squareness of cut, surface for laminations, laps and scale, marking and tags, certificate by heat and composition, packaging. For coated products — zinc or polymer thickness with a coating gauge; for stainless steel — a composition check with a portable analyser. The result is a report with photographs before shipment.
How a batch is calculated
The batch is calculated for your volume — send the specification: grade and standard, thickness, sheet format, coating and surface, quantity in sheets or tonnes, certificate requirements. From the specification we find a producing mill, agree the rolling and packaging terms and reply with a calculation.
