How to tell a counterfeit bearing from a genuine one

A counterfeit often cannot be told apart by sight: both the ring and the box are copied. Three methods are reliable: buy from the manufacturer or its authorized distributor, scan the packaging code with the manufacturer's app, and send a photo of the marking to the manufacturer if in doubt.

A counterfeit bearing is a product of unknown origin carrying someone else's trademark: SKF, NSK, FAG, Koyo. Outwardly it can be almost indistinguishable, because both the marking and the box are faked. So the main protection is not inspection but the source: a bearing from the manufacturer or its authorized distributor. The second level is checking the code on the packaging with the manufacturer's app. The third is a photo of the marking sent to the manufacturer itself. A visual check helps catch a crude fake, but it does not catch a good one.

Why a counterfeit is dangerous

A counterfeit is made of cheaper steel and with poorer machining. NSK says directly that such bearings almost certainly fail before their time. For a plant, that means an unplanned stop, repair of the unit, and a risk to people if the unit is critical.

Counterfeits are found nearby too. In December 2025, 8,513 bearings carrying the SKF trademark without the rights holder's permission were seized from a warehouse in Shymkent. Experts confirmed they were fakes, the seller was fined, and the lot was destroyed.

What you can see yourself

The signs below are gathered from NSK's recommendations and independent distributors. Each of them is a reason to check further, not a verdict.

Where to lookWarning sign
Ringno marking at all; the inscription is in an unusual place or does not look like the brand's normal marking
Raceways and rolling elementsrough machining, rollers look uneven
Cagethe design differs from the genuine one of the same model: for example, a riveted two-piece cage instead of a one-piece one
Packagingweak or unsuitable for transport; boxes differ from earlier deliveries; the logo and text are distorted
Originthe country of manufacture in the documents does not match the country the cargo came from
Sellernot on the brand's list of authorized distributors

The main limit: a good counterfeit passes all of these points. The box is copied skillfully. So a visual check is a first filter, not a verification.

Price is not proof

A price that is too low is a reason for caution. But the reverse does not work: counterfeits are also sold at the price of the genuine part, which is where the seller's profit lies. Also suspicious are "short lead times from stock" on an item that official channels take a long time to bring in, and mailings offering "genuine from stock". A certificate sent by the seller does not prove authenticity: counterfeits come with paperwork too.

Apps for checking

Large bearing manufacturers put a code on the packaging, a QR or DataMatrix code. You check it with an app.

  • WBA Bearing Authenticator is the app of the World Bearing Association. It unites the manufacturers' associations of Japan, Europe and the USA. The app checks whether the scanned code is in the manufacturer's database. There are three possible answers: the code is valid; the code is valid but has been scanned too often, so ask the manufacturer; the code is unknown, so a counterfeit is likely. The app description names JTEKT (Koyo), NACHI, NTN, NSK, Schaeffler (INA, FAG), SKF and Timken.
  • SKF Authenticate: you photograph the product following the app's prompts and send it. SKF specialists check it and reply whether it is genuine or not.
  • NSK Verify checks the code on the box of NSK bearings. At first the app was for machine tool bearings. NSK later announced an extension to industrial ones.
  • Schaeffler has OriginCheck, and NTN has Authenti Bear.

What to know about the apps:

  • A green answer is a strong sign of authenticity, but not a guarantee. A genuine code can be copied onto a fake box. The yellow answer "scanned many times" is exactly what catches such copies.
  • The code checks the box, not the bearing. A bearing without its box cannot be checked with the app.
  • We have not checked whether these apps are available in the stores of your country. Before buying, find out whether the app you need installs on your phone.

If you doubt

  1. Do not put the bearing into a critical unit until you have an answer.
  2. Photograph clearly all the marking on the ring and the box, the label and the code.
  3. Prepare the seller's name and the purchase document. The manufacturer usually asks for them first.
  4. Send the photos through the app or to the manufacturer's brand protection service. Contacts are on the brands' websites and on stopfakebearings.com.
  5. Check the seller against the list of authorized distributors on the brand's website, or by calling its representative office.

A separate risk is contractors who repair motors, pumps and gearboxes. NSK advises checking them too: a counterfeit bearing can end up inside a repaired unit without the repairer's knowledge.

Counterfeits and the supply route

The more resellers between the manufacturer and you, the more places where a copy can replace the genuine part. Everyone in the chain sees the box, but does not always know where the previous seller got it. A short route "plant to buyer" and documents that name the manufacturer directly remove most of the risk.

How we do it

  • Before the order we send you the item we found with photos and specifications, and we say where it comes from.
  • At the plant, before shipment, we check the marking on the rings and boxes against your number and photograph it.
  • If the marking or packaging raises questions, we tell you before shipment, not after.
