Description

Welded mesh is made from VR-1 cold-drawn indented wire to GOST 6727-80 or from plain wire to GOST 3282, joined by resistance spot welding at every intersection on multi-electrode machines. Welded mesh for reinforcing concrete structures is governed by GOST 8478-81 and GOST 23279-2012; Chinese mills weld it to GB/T 1499.3 from Q195–Q235 wire or CRB550 to GB/T 13788. Masonry mesh with 50×50 and 100×100 openings comes in rolls and sheets of masonry width; road mesh with 100–200 mm openings comes in sheets up to 2×6 m.

The difference between the wires lies in profile and strength: VR-1 and CRB550 have indentations or ribs for bond with concrete and strength class B500, while plain St2kp–St3 wire is used for masonry and render, where bond is not specified. GOST 23279 sets tolerances on mesh opening, wire diameter, sheet dimensions and weld joint strength; the number of unwelded joints is limited by the standard.

During inspection at the mill the bureau measures the wire diameter with a micrometer on longitudinal and transverse wires, the mesh opening and sheet dimensions with callipers and a tape, checks the shear strength of weld joints and counts unwelded intersections on sheets from different bundles. The mill test certificate (MTC) is checked against the wire heat, strength class and test results; the bundle marking, tag and strapping preventing sheet deformation during handling are checked.

Packing and shipment

Sheets in bundles strapped with wire or steel band in four places, rolls tied in three places; bundle weight is agreed in the specification. A mill tag on the bundle with opening, diameter, sheet size and wire heat.

Buyer questions

How to read a mill test certificate for wire and mesh
The mill test certificate (MTC) states the standard, steel grade, wire rod heat number, chemical composition, diameter, tensile strength, elongation and number of reverse bends; for galvanized wire, the zinc weight per m². The bureau checks the heat number against the tag on the coil or mesh bundle and against the marking on the packaging: a certificate without a matching heat is not accepted.
How tying wire differs from galvanized wire and which to choose
Tying wire is annealed (O), soft, bends by hand and does not spring back; it is used for tying reinforcement cages and stays inside the concrete, where corrosion is not critical. Galvanized wire is usually unannealed, stiffer, with a zinc coating of class 1Ts or 2Ts; it works outdoors: fencing, guy wires, fixing mesh. Galvanized wire is not needed for tying cages, and black wire is not suitable for outdoor use.
How the tonnage of wire and mesh is calculated
Wire is calculated by weight: the weight per linear metre equals 0.006165·d², where d is the diameter in millimetres; the length per coil and per tonne follows from this. Welded mesh is calculated by weight per square metre: twice the number of wires per metre multiplied by the weight per metre of wire, plus the overhangs at the sheet edges. Chain-link mesh is counted in rolls of a given width and length; the roll weight is stated in the mill certificate.
What is checked during inspection at the mill
Wire diameter with a micrometer in two perpendicular directions on several coils of the batch, ovality, absence of scale and cracks; for galvanized wire, zinc weight by the gravimetric method and coating adhesion by wrapping around a mandrel. For welded mesh: wire diameter, mesh opening, sheet dimensions, shear strength of weld joints, number of unwelded joints. The certificate is checked against the heat, along with marking, tag and packaging; an inspection report with photographs is drawn up.
How a batch is formed and whether there is a minimum quantity
The batch is sized to your quantity; send a specification with diameters, mesh openings, sheet or roll dimensions and coating requirements. Wire and mesh of different sizes are combined in one container so that the load is complete; the weight of coil, roll and bundle is agreed with the mill when the order is placed.
