Theoretical weight at steel density 7.85 g/cm³. Actual batch weight is by scale and mill certificate.
AISI 304 is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel: chromium 17.5–19.5 %, nickel 8–10.5 % to ASTM A240/A240M. Chromium forms a passive oxide film on the surface, nickel stabilises the austenitic structure — the steel is non-magnetic in the annealed condition, welds and stamps well. Thin sheet up to 3 mm is cold-rolled by mills in China to GB/T 3280-2015 with a 2B or BA finish, heavy plate is hot-rolled to GB/T 4237-2015 with a No.1 finish after pickling. The nearest equivalents are 08Kh18N10 to GOST 5632-2014, 06Cr19Ni10 to GB/T 20878, 1.4301 to EN 10088-2.
304L differs in carbon content — up to 0.03 % against 0.07 % for 304: when heavy plate is welded, chromium carbides do not precipitate in the weld zone and resistance to intergranular corrosion is retained without subsequent heat treatment. Equivalents of 304L are 03Kh18N11 to GOST, 022Cr19Ni10 to GB, 1.4307 to EN. Separately: 12Kh18N10T is the equivalent of titanium-stabilised grade 321, not of 304, and one must not be substituted for the other in a specification. The finish is chosen for the product: 2B — general purpose, BA — bright after bright annealing, No.4 and HL — brushed for architecture and lifts, No.1 — for heavy plate to be welded.
At the mill before shipment the bureau's inspector checks the chemical composition of the sample sheets with a portable X-ray fluorescence analyser — chromium and nickel content against the grade limits — and compares it with the mill test certificate (MTC) by heat number; this rules out substitution of 304 by manganese steel 201. Thickness is measured with a micrometer at several points, format and squareness of cut with a tape, and the surface is examined for scores, dents, heat tint and damage to the protective film. Packaging with interleaving between sheets is checked. The report with photographs is handed to you before shipment. The calculated table below uses a density of 7.85 g/cm³; the density of 1.4301 steel to EN 10088 is 7.9 g/cm³, so the actual weight by weighing at the mill is less than 1 % above the calculated one and is stated in the packing list.
Timber pallet or crate: sheets with protective film, paper interleaving between sheets, steel top cover, strapped with steel band; mill tag with grade, heat, thickness, finish and number of sheets.

Equivalents are the closest match, not identical: chemistry and tolerances differ between standards. The exact grade and standard are written into the contract.
