A Larssen sheet pile is a hot-rolled trough-shaped section with interlocks along both edges: the piles interlock into a continuous wall that retains soil and water. L4 and L5 are profiles to GOST 4781-85 with the Larssen-type interlock, 400 and 420 mm wide, 74 and 100 kg/m. In EN 10248 such profiles belong to the U-type; mills in China roll them to GB/T 20933. Sheet piles are rolled on beam and heavy-section mills from blooms; the interlock is formed in the final passes and determines the main property of the profile, the free engagement of the interlock and the tightness of the wall.
Steel grades: St3sp and St3ps to GOST 4781-85, S270GP, S355GP and higher to EN 10248-1, Q345P to GB/T 20933. The yield strength of S355GP is 355 MPa against 270 for S270GP, so at the same bending moment it allows a lighter profile or a deeper excavation. Sheet piles are extracted and reused, hence the specification's requirements for straightness and interlock condition, not only for the section.
During inspection at the mill we measure web and flange thickness with a micrometer, profile width and depth with callipers and a tape, and the interlock with a gauge and a trial engagement of two piles; we check straightness, length and surface. We compare the mill test certificate (MTC), its heat number, chemical composition and mechanical properties, against the marking on the pile; bundling and loading are recorded with photographs in the inspection report, with a separate record that the interlocks have not been crushed by slings.
Bundles of 4–8 piles strapped with steel band, slung over spacers so as not to crush the interlocks; paint marking on each pile: profile, steel grade, length, heat number.

| St3sp5 / S245 | Q235B | A36 | S235JR | Impact toughness is specified at different temperatures: at −20 °C for St3sp5, at +20 °C for Q235B and S235JR. A cold-climate requirement is written into the specification separately. |

| S355 | Q355C | A572 Gr.50 | S355J0 | Nearest equivalent by yield strength of 355 MPa; impact test temperature and method are specific to each of the three standards. |
| — | Q355B | A992 Gr.50 | S355JR | A992 is a grade for wide-flange beams with an upper limit on yield strength. Nearest equivalent, not an exact match. |
| — | Q345P | A572 Gr.50 | S355GP | Sheet-pile grades. L4 and L5 to GOST 4781-85 are rolled from St3sp and St3ps; GOST has no dedicated sheet-pile grade. Nearest equivalent, not an exact match. |
Equivalents are the closest match, not identical: chemistry and tolerances differ between standards. The exact grade and standard are written into the contract.
