How cargo travels from China to Uzbekistan: road, border, customs
Cargo from China goes by rail through Kazakhstan, by truck, or by a mixed route through Kyrgyzstan. Urgent, light items go by air. At each border it is reloaded or its seal is checked, and in Uzbekistan it is cleared under a declaration.

Uzbekistan has no common border with China. So cargo always goes in transit: through Kazakhstan or through Kyrgyzstan. There are three main routes. Rail through Kazakhstan is for heavy and large cargo. A mixed route through Kyrgyzstan, where part of the way the cargo goes by truck. Truck all the way. Urgent and light items go by air. At the China–Kazakhstan border the rail gauge changes, and the cargo is reloaded. In Uzbekistan it is cleared under a customs declaration, and only then released to the warehouse.
Three land routes
| Route | Where the border with China is | What happens there |
|---|---|---|
| Rail through Kazakhstan | Alashankou — Dostyk or Khorgos — Altynkol | change of gauge: reloading or moving the container |
| Mixed route through Kyrgyzstan | Irkeshtam | rail to Kashgar, then truck to Osh, then rail again from there |
| Truck through Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan | Khorgos; Irkeshtam or Torugart | check of seal and documents, transit under customs control |
Rail through Kazakhstan
This is the main route for heavy and long cargo. In China the rail gauge is 1,435 mm; in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan it is 1,520 mm. So at the border the cargo moves from a Chinese wagon to a wide-gauge wagon, and a container is moved by crane to another platform. At Dostyk station there is also a point where the wagons' bogies are changed.
There are two crossings. Historically the main one is Alashankou — Dostyk. The second is Khorgos — Altynkol. Kazakhstan Railways described it as the shorter one for cargo to Central Asia, and in 2023 part of the cargo to Uzbekistan was moved there while the first crossing was under repair. From there the cargo goes through Kazakhstan to the Saryagash crossing on the border with Uzbekistan and on to stations in Tashkent or other cities.
Mixed route through Kyrgyzstan
There is no railway from China into Kyrgyzstan yet. So the cargo goes by train to Kashgar, where it is reloaded onto trucks. The trucks go over the Irkeshtam pass to Osh. In Osh the cargo is put back on rails and goes to Uzbekistan through Andijan. Trial trains on this scheme ran to Tashkent in 2023.
For the Fergana Valley this route is shorter. But it has two reloadings and a mountain pass, so long and heavy cargo is chosen for it with care.
Truck
The truck goes from the plant to the warehouse without reloading. This suits equipment that does not like extra crane handling. Through Kazakhstan, trucks cross at Khorgos; through Kyrgyzstan, at Irkeshtam or Torugart, and then through the Dostuk point between Osh and Andijan. The road through Torugart to Naryn is sometimes closed in winter because of snow and avalanches.
Part of road transport goes under the TIR system. The cargo travels in a sealed body, and customs of the transit countries rely on the seal and the document rather than opening the body at every border.
What happens at the borders
At each border three things are checked: the documents, the seal, and the cargo itself if customs decides to inspect it.
- Leaving China. Export clearance. Without it the cargo does not leave the country.
- Transit through Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. The cargo is not imported into the country but passes through it under control. The transport document travels with the cargo: the SMGS note on rail, the CMR on road.
- Entering Uzbekistan. Border and customs control at the checkpoint. After that the cargo goes to the place of clearance.
Customs clearance in Uzbekistan
The cargo is released for free circulation under a cargo customs declaration. It is filed electronically.
- HS code. The payments depend on it, and so does the need for permits.
- Documents. Contract, invoice, packing list, waybill, certificate of origin. The Code allows documents in foreign languages accepted in international carriage.
- Customs value and payments. Duty, VAT, excise if applicable, and customs fees.
- Certificate of conformity. Needed for goods on the mandatory certification list. The exemption for equipment and spare parts imported for a company's own production, in force since 2018, was cancelled by Decree UP-25 from 18.02.2026. Whether your item needs a certificate is checked by its HS code for each specific import.
- Inspection and release. Customs may inspect the cargo. After the check and payment, the goods are released.
Clearance is handled by the declarant or a customs broker. He picks the code, calculates the payments and files the declaration.
Why there are no lead times here
Time in transit is made up of the queue at the crossing, the availability of wagons and trucks, the weather on the pass and customs workload in a given week. Crossings are closed for repair and new routes are opened. Any number of days on this page would be a promise that depends neither on us nor on the plant.
How we do it
- We choose the route by the value of the lot and how urgently it is needed: air, train or truck.
- We agree the packing with the plant for transport, not for movement around the workshop.
- TAMINOTA prepares the invoice, packing list, transport documents, HS code, certification and declaration. You receive the cargo at your warehouse.
